On November 5th in a near-future totalitarian Britain, Evey Hammond is rescued from the secret police by a masked vigilante who calls himself V — and watches with him as V detonates the Old Bailey courthouse, fireworks lighting the London sky. It is the opening act of V's precisely planned campaign: he has exactly one year from this Guy Fawkes Night to bring down the regime, and he intends to keep his promise.

On the second November 5th of the story — a year after V first revealed himself — he fulfills his promise: broadcasting on every television in England, destroying the Jordan Tower (the state's propaganda arm) and the Post Office Tower (its surveillance network), and leaving the regime leaderless. What follows is not V's victory but the citizens of London, in their thousands and their Guy Fawkes masks, marching on Parliament.
