At 11:40 PM on April 14, 1912, lookout Frederick Fleet spots an iceberg dead ahead and rings the bridge bell three times — but the Titanic, traveling at 22 knots in the dark, cannot turn in time and strikes it along 300 feet of the starboard hull. The collision lasts ten seconds; 2,224 people have two hours and forty minutes left.

At 2:20 AM on April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic — stern raised nearly vertical as the bow floods — breaks apart and plunges two miles to the ocean floor. Of the 2,224 people aboard, 1,517 perish in the 28-degree water; 710 survivors in lifeboats wait three hours in darkness before Carpathia arrives. Cameron's film uses the exact documented timeline, intercut with fictional lovers Jack and Rose.
