In late November, Dickie Greenleaf agrees to take Tom Ripley on a day trip to San Remo — a parting gesture, since Ripley can sense he is about to be cut loose. On a rented boat offshore, Ripley beats Dickie to death with an oar and dumps his body into the sea, then rows back to shore and steps ashore as Dickie Greenleaf, beginning a new life inside someone else's identity.
