On an afternoon in early summer, Tom Buchanan takes his new acquaintance Nick Carraway to the garage of George Wilson and his wife Myrtle — Tom's mistress — in the industrial outskirts of Long Island. The day ends in Myrtle's Manhattan apartment at an impromptu, increasingly drunken party that concludes when Tom breaks her nose for the offense of saying Daisy's name.
