Donnie Darko (2001)

On October 2, 1988, a jet engine falls from the sky and crashes through the bedroom roof of Donnie Darko — who narrowly escapes because a six-foot demonic rabbit named Frank led him outside in his sleep. Frank tells Donnie the world will end in twenty-eight days, six hours, forty-two minutes, and twelve seconds, and instructs him to commit a series of destructive acts that will only make sense in the final hours.

On October 30, 1988 — the last night of the twenty-eight-day countdown — the tangent universe collapses and Donnie understands what he has to do. He drives to Roberta Sparrow's house, watches Gretchen die, shoots Frank, then returns home and laughs as the jet engine falls through the roof — choosing death to restore the primary timeline and save everyone he loves.
