On December 10th, a dying man named Don Eber walks into the snowy woods behind his house intending to freeze to death before his brain tumor strips him of who he is — and encounters a ten-year-old boy who has fallen through thin ice. Saunders's title story is about two ordinary, unheroic people who save each other without quite meaning to, each briefly glimpsing something beyond the private fantasy they have been living in.
