On August 8, a fierce storm drives an unknown schooner into Whitby Harbour and runs it aground on the beach. The crew are all dead, lashed to their posts; the captain is bound to the wheel with a crucifix wound into his hands. Before anyone can board, a large black dog bounds ashore from the bow and disappears into the town. The ship's log identifies her as the Demeter, out of Varna. The boxes of earth she was carrying are claimed and carted away. Count Dracula has arrived in England.
