3/7/1965

On March 7, 1965, six hundred civil rights marchers cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama in a peaceful voting rights demonstration — and are met on the other side by state troopers with clubs and a mounted posse. The footage of 'Bloody Sunday,' broadcast on national television that evening, shocked the country and accelerated congressional passage of the Voting Rights Act five months later.
